Voter Suppression Attempt Challenged by Priorities USA Withdrawn by Petitioners in Nevada
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican State Senate candidate Raja Mourey and R.I.S.E. Nevada withdrew their petition seeking to create a new photo ID requirement for in-person voting and limit acceptable IDs that voters can present to cure a mismatched signature. Priorities USA announced funding for a challenge to this petition earlier this month.
This is the second time Priorities has supported a lawsuit to block this effort. A nearly identical petition was filed by the same proponents in May but was blocked by the courts in July, finding that it constituted an unfunded mandate in violation of the Nevada Constitution. The proposals would have disenfranchised lawful Nevada voters.
Plaintiffs will move to voluntarily dismiss the case. The complaint argued that although the petition requires the Secretary to furnish IDs to certain categories of voters, it does so without raising any revenue to cover those costs, which could run into the millions of dollars.
