Statement from Priorities USA Chairman Guy Cecil Regarding SCOTUS Voting Rights Decision

July 01, 2021

Today, in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee and Arizona Republican Party v. Democratic National Committee, the Supreme Court sided against American voters with a narrow reading of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act that will likely open the floodgates to more state restrictions on the right to vote. Priorities USA Chairman Guy Cecil issued the following statement:

“The Supreme Court has once again sided with the right-wing, anti-democratic forces seeking to delegitimize our elections. From gutting Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to avoiding the issue of partisan gerrymandering, this decision is in line with the Court’s pattern of ignoring American voters in favor of right-wing power structures. We must acknowledge that the Supreme Court’s rollback of voting rights has disproportionately impacted Black, brown, and young voters and allowed for state legislatures to enact a host of racist voter suppression policies in the last decade.

Priorities USA and our allies on the ground will not be deterred by this latest attack on the right to vote. We will continue to invest millions of dollars in litigation — which has already secured relief for millions — and support direct outreach to voters to connect Americans with the resources they need to cast their ballot and fight back against barriers to the vote. This ruling is a setback — but our resolve to secure equal voting rights for every American remains unshaken.”
