Statement from Priorities USA Chairman Guy Cecil on the Bill Signing of the Respect for Marriage Act

December 13, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Today, Guy Cecil, Chairman of Priorities USA, issued the following statement in response to President Biden signing the Respect for Marriage Act:

“Today is a cause for celebration. For decades, LGBTQ and interracial couples have fought to exercise the same rights and protections in their marriages that other Americans hold dear. The Respect for Marriage Act honors these relationships with the dignity we have deserved from the very beginning.

“As a gay man, I am personally grateful for the swift action by President Biden, Senator Baldwin and every member of Congress who voted to protect my own marriage from future conservative attacks. Even more, I am indebted to the activists who have worked for years to demand that our love be seen and protected as fully equal. I am particularly mindful of the generations who came before us who never got to see this day come to fruition.

“After the Dobbs decision overturning the constitutional right to an abortion, we knew that the right to full marriage equality was under direct threat. Now, LGBTQ and interracial couples no longer have to live in fear that their marriages will be denied or go unrecognized if they cross state borders.

“While this is a momentous occasion, there is still more work to be done to expand the LGBTQ’s community’s civil rights protections, including in housing and employment.

“It’s been a long, difficult road to make it to this point, but we should all be proud that the United States has today become a more free, equal and inclusive country for all, no matter who you love.”
