Priorities USA, American Federation of Teachers Respond to Glenn Youngkin’s Attack on Teachers

October 27, 2021

Priorities USA and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) announced a digital advertising partnership to counter Glenn Youngkin’s attacks on education ahead of critical statewide elections in Virginia.

The $100,000 ad spend will focus on reaching voters who have seen Glenn Youngkin’s ad attacking teachers on TV. The counter-ads will target these voters on digital platforms including YouTube and streaming TV.

The digital advertising effort will increase the reach of an ongoing TV ad campaign by AFT to ensure voters know that Glenn Youngkin’s education agenda leaves teachers, parents and students behind. The ads emphasize Terry McAuliffe’s strong leadership on education and Youngkin’s plan to weaken public schools.

Priorities previously announced an additional $1.7 million bilingual mobilization program which specifically focused on reaching Black voters in Virginia.

“Priorities USA is proud to partner with the American Federation of Teachers to reach Virginians at a crucial point in this election cycle. The future of our children is at stake and we cannot let Glenn Youngkin turn racist fear mongering into education policy,” said Guy Cecil, Chairman of Priorities USA. “Terry McAuliffe will make Virginia’s schools stronger and produce better outcomes for students. We’re engaging Virginians on digital platforms because we know this is where they are looking for critical information. We’ll be there to communicate the facts about each candidate’s record on education.”

“There’s one candidate in this race who has walked the walk when it comes to our kids, our parents, our educators, our public schools and so much more. Terry McAuliffe is that candidate. As governor, he had a demonstrated track record of listening to the people he represents, engaging directly with parents and teachers,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “While McAuliffe runs a campaign that engages the community on issues like keeping schools safe during the pandemic, making college affordable for all Virginians, and investing in STEM education, his opponent is trying to pit the people closest to our kids against each other, using divisive, destabilizing tactics to advance a plan that diverts money out of neighborhood public schools. With partisan vitriol, misinformation and attacks at an all-time high, it’s important that all Virginians understand that Terry McAuliffe is the best candidate to lead the state forward.”
