Who is Kamala Harris?
Vice President Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants and civil rights activists from India and Jamaica, has always been a trailblazer for justice. As the District of Attorney for San Francisco and later as California’s Attorney General, she took on powerful interests to ensure that nobody was above the law. In the Senate, Kamala forcefully took on the Trump administration and Brett Kavanaugh.
She made history becoming the first Black and Indian-American woman elected Vice President in American history, helping the Biden-Harris administration secure tremendous advances for the American people on climate change, student loan relief, infrastructure and gun violence.

- Since Roe was overturned, Harris has held dozens of events in at least 20 states across the country focused on the issue of abortion and reproductive freedoms.
- VP Harris made history when she became the first sitting president or vice president to visit an abortion clinic.
- Harris has fought to protect access to medication abortions and supported the administration’s efforts to protect patient privacy for individuals seeking abortions.
- As President, Harris has promised to restore the power of Roe v. Wade.
Climate Change
- As San Francisco’s District Attorney, Harris created the city’s first environmental justice unit to investigate environmental crimes impacting poor communities.

Gun Violence Prevention
- As California Attorney General, Harris overturned a court ruling that loosened restrictions on the ability to carry concealed guns.
- As Senator, Harris co-sponsored legislation to require universal background checks for gun sales and legislation to close the so-called “boyfriend loophole.” (The “boyfriend loophole” or “dating partner loophole” is that while spouses could be denied gun rights if they had a domestic violence misdemeanor, boyfriends/romantic partners could not.)
- Harris launched the first-ever national red flag law resource center in Parkland, FL after meeting with families of the victims of the Parkland shooting.
- As Vice President, Harris responded to mass shootings by calling for stronger background checks, red flag laws, and restrictions on assault rifles.
- As Vice President, Harris led the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and passed the first gun safety laws in decades, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which:
- Expanded background checks
- Finally closed the “boyfriend loophole”
- Invested $15 billion in funding for school security and mental health
- Harris announced the Biden-Harris administration’s rule to:
- Close the gun show loophole (that guns sold at fairs, gun shows didn’t undergo background checks)
- Prohibit individuals convicted of domestic violence from purchasing guns

LGBTQ+ Rights
- In 2004, as California District Attorney, Harris performed some of the first same-sex marriages in the country and created a hate crimes unit to investigate and prosecute violence against LGBTQ+ individuals.
- As California Attorney General, Harris refused to defend California’s ban on same-sex marriage.
- As a Senator, Harris co-sponsored the Equality Act, legislation that would extend non-discrimination protections to sex, sexual orientation and gender identity in federal law.
- As VIce President, Harris took action to improve mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth and strengthen federal employment protections for LGBTQ+ workers.
Criminal Justice
- Early in her career, Harris worked as a prosecutor focused on sex crimes and child sexual exploitation cases.
- As California’s Attorney General, Harris:
- Created a new office focused on crimes against children
- Prioritized prosecuting and fighting human trafficking in California
- Made the California Department of justice the first statewide agency in the country to adopt a body camera program
- As Senator, Harris endorsed police body cam proposals and introduced the Justice in Policing Act, legislation that was introduced in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd – among other things, it would have banned chokeholds, mandated body cameras for federal and local police, and reformed qualified immunity to allow for greater accountability.
- As Vice President, Harris has led the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to reform the criminal justice system.
Racial Justice
- As a Senator, Harris introduced legislation to address the Black maternal health care crisis and reduce racial disparities in health care.
- According to a 2013 CDC study, Black children had on average twice as much lead in their blood than white children. As Vice President, Harris helped secure billions in funding to replace lead pipes across the country.
- As Vice President, Harris:
- Announced the Biden-Harris administration’s effort to ban medical debt from credit reports, which disproportionately impacts women and Black people.
- Worked to improve access to health care for Black Americans, particularly focused on Black maternal health
- Cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which invested $60 billion in communities of color to address the impact of climate change in those communities.
- Announced a $20 billion effort to combat pollution and improve air quality in low income and disadvantaged communities.
Caregiving + Motherhood
- VP Harris has fought to address the high cost of caregiving, announcing rules to improve safety in long-term care facilities and to improve home care services for seniors and people with disabilities.
- 40 states expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage for a full year after Harris held the first Maternal Health Day of Action at the White House, calling on states to do so.
- The Biden-Harris administration capped the cost of child care for more than 100,000 working families.
- Harris announced new federal maternal health standards requiring hospitals to include specific life-saving equipment in delivery rooms.
Voting Rights
- Harris is at the forefront of democracy protection efforts in the Biden-Harris administration, leading the administration’s fight to protect the right to vote across the country.
- Harris has traveled around the country speaking out on voting rights and against voter suppression laws.

Education
- As California’s Attorney General, Harris sued for-profit colleges that were saddling students with unsustainable debt, a suit that led to their closure in California.
- The Biden-Harris administration has canceled $168 billion in student loan debt for nearly 4.8 million Americans, including nearly one million individuals eligible through their public service work like teachers, law enforcement officers, public health workers, and elder caregivers.
- As a presidential candidate, Harris called for free community college and for making attendance at historically black colleges/universities debt-free.
- As a presidential candidate, Harris proposed investments in public education, including:
- A national pre-K program
- Head Start expansion (federally-funded early education program for children of low-income families)

Championing American Workers
- As Senator, Harris supported a federal $15 minimum wage and backed legislation to protect the right to organize across the country.
- As Vice President, Harris launched the Economic Opportunity Coalition to invest in community finance organizations and support entrepreneurship within minority and underserved communities.
- As Vice President, Harris chaired the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment and stood with striking workers across the country.
The Economy
- Under the Biden-Harris administration more than 15 million jobs have been created, including nearly 800,000 manufacturing jobs.
- VP Harris backed and helped pass the $1 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is creating hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs that don’t require a college degree, and rebuilding and upgrading our nation’s infrastructure.
- The Biden-Harris administration has made $563 billion investment in infrastructure, and clean energy.
Cutting Costs for American Families
- As California’s Attorney General, Harris secured a $12 billion settlement of some of the country’s biggest banks and mortgage lenders who were accused of illegally foreclosing on homeowners during the 2008 financial crisis.
- As Vice President, Harris cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which is helping bring down costs for American families, including their energy costs and the cost of prescription drugs for seniors.
- After Republicans refused to pass continued funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program, which helped families afford high-speed internet, VP Harris secured the funding for Wi-Fi hotspots at schools and libraries.
- The Biden-Harris administration capped the amount by which rent could be increased in housing units for low-income families.
Who Is Tim Walz
Who is Tim Walz?
Born in a small town in rural Nebraska, his mother was a community activist and his father a public school administrator who died of cancer two years after Mr. Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard at age 17. After losing his father, Walz’s family relied on the GI Bill and Social Security to make ends meet. After attending college and spending a year teaching abroad, Walz served full time in the Army National Guard before accepting a high school teaching and coaching position.
Tim won his first election to the House of Representatives in 2006 and was re-elected five times. He was first elected Governor in 2018 and won re-election in 2022. As governor, Walz has been a champion of progressive issues, including providing universal free school meals for students, protecting reproductive freedom, and strengthening voting rights.

Abortion
Gov. Tim Walz enshrined the right to an abortion and reproductive healthcare in Minnesota, becoming the first state to protect abortion rights in 2023. The protections made Minnesota a safe haven for access to reproductive care for people in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Iowa (all states that banned abortion).
Walz on Criminal JusticeClimate Justice
During his time in Congress in 2009, Walz voted for the biggest attempt at climate legislation under the Obama presidency. As governor, he signed a law requiring carbon-free electricity in Minnesota by 2040.
Walz on Gun Violence PreventionGun Violence Prevention
Gov. Walz, a gun owner and hunter, became an outspoken gun violence prevention advocate after the Parkland shooting in 2018, then donating all previous campaign donations from the NRA. He then signed ‘red flag’ orders and universal background checks into law in Minnesota.
Walz on LGBTQ RightsLGBTQ+ Rights
Walz is a longtime LGBTQ+ ally, even becoming the faculty advisor to the Gay Straight alliance club at the high school where he was a teacher and football coach. In Congress, he supported marriage equality and voted to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’. As governor, Walz issued an executive order banning conversion therapy in the state.
