Priorities USA Supports Lawsuit Against Absentee Ballot Restriction in Minnesota
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday Minnesota Alliance for Retired Americans and civilian plaintiffs filed a Priorities USA supported and funded lawsuit to challenge a provision that unnecessarily restricts absentee ballot access.
This lawsuit challenges Minnesota’s requirement that voters using absentee ballots obtain the signature of a registered Minnesota voter, notary, or other official to exercise their right to vote and participate in the political process. This exposes a significant threat to Minnesota voters’ right to vote, and is in violation of federal voting rights laws.
“All voters should be able to vote by mail and know that their ballot will be counted,” said Michael Madden, President of the Minnesota Alliance for Retired Americans, a grassroots advocacy organization with more than 86,000 members. “These requirements create an unnecessary barrier to voting, especially for older Americans who live alone, and do nothing to make voting more secure.”
“Threats to absentee ballot access are nothing more than voter suppression that disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities, including people of color,” said Danielle Butterfield, Executive Director of Priorities USA. “We are proud to support the Minnesota Alliance for Retired Americans in their efforts to protect the right to vote for citizens in their state.”
