Statement from Priorities USA Chairman Guy Cecil on Josh Shapiro’s Election as the Next Governor of Pennsylvania
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Guy Cecil, Chairman of Priorities USA, issued the following statement in response to Josh Shapiro’s victory in his bid for Pennsylvania governor:
“I congratulate Josh Shapiro on his decisive victory to become Pennsylvania’s next governor. As Attorney General, Josh put the people of Pennsylvania at the center of his work every day and I am confident he will continue fighting for every Pennsylvanian as their governor.
“Priorities made a $17 million investment in reaching Pennsylvania voters online. By amplifying issues that voters care about most, we mobilized the political power of communities all across Pennsylvania.
“This success was hard-fought and represents Priorities’ long term efforts to engage Pennsylvania voters online and protect their right to vote. These included specific campaigns targeting Black and Latino voters that encouraged them to check their registration and vote. Priorities also called out Doug Mastriano’s ties to Republican extremism — from abortion restrictions, the January 6th insurrection and Trumpism — to highlight the high stakes of the election.
“Josh Shapiro’s victory sends a clear message that Pennsylvania voters will not tolerate the Republican extremism that has become all too common in the Republican Party. We must continue to fight back against the forces that seek to dismantle our democracy and gut our fundamental rights.
“Pennsylvanians also faced clear voter suppression attempts that disproportionately impacted voters of color, voters with disabilities and elderly voters. Priorities fought to protect and expand Pennsylvanians’ voting rights in two separate lawsuits. Just a few weeks before Election Day, Priorities defeated a GOP effort to restrict ballot drop boxes in Lehigh County. In Chester County, Priorities supported another legal intervention to protect drop box access.
“We know that every vote matters and Democrats must continue to protect access to the ballot everywhere it is threatened.”
